Teacher as Co-Traveller: Transforming Pedagogy at the Grassroots

Across my 24 years of experience, including work in 21 border villages in Nepal and sensitive regions of Jammu & Kashmir (Uri, Anantnag, Doda), I have realized that the teacher is the true cornerstone of educational reform.

However, to change the classroom, we must first change the role of the teacher. The teacher must transform from an authority figure delivering lectures into a co-traveller in the learning journey.

Grassroots Teacher Empowerment

In our teacher training workshops, we do not focus on dry theory. Instead, we engage teachers in the exact same activities we want them to run with children. We build toys, design worksheets, play games, and hold discussions. When teachers experience the joy of learning themselves, they are naturally inspired to bring that joy back to their classrooms.

Lessons from the Border Regions

In remote and conflict-sensitive areas, school is often the only stable, joyful space in a child's life. Ensuring that this space is warm, stress-free, and welcoming is crucial. Our workshops in Uri and Doda focused heavily on creating low-cost, local educational materials that can be easily recreated by teachers using scrap paper, leaves, pebbles, and matchboxes.
